Spiders

What are spiders?

Like other unwanted pests, spiders can make people feel uncomfortable in their yards and homes. Black widow spiders, wolf spiders, orb weavers, and brown recluse spiders are examples of spiders that live in and around Manteca, CA.

These eight-legged arachnids are predatory, meaning they hunt and feed on other living things, mainly other spiders and insects. Though they are a vital part of the environment helping to control populations of nuisance insects, spiders should never be allowed to take over our indoor and outdoor spaces.

Are spiders dangerous?

The two spider species are the most cause for concern in our area and across the country are the black widow spider and the brown recluse spider. Both produce venom that can cause serious medical complications in people if a bite were to occur. While bites from these spiders are typically not life-threatening, they are serious, and the symptoms need to be managed by a medical professional.

Other spiders, like wolf spiders and orb-weaver spiders, common in Manteca, also produce venom, but it isn’t strong enough to cause serious medical issues. When it comes to spiders, the bright side is that most of the ones we come into contact with are harmless.

Why do I have a spider problem?

Though spiders are not something most people love to spot on their property, the majority of spiders are extremely helpful to have in or near our yards. They help keep our gardens, flowerbeds, and homes free of pest insects that can cause damage and be an annoyance. But, when spiders begin to take over your property and move into your home, they are unwanted.

Where will I find spiders?

Spiders will take advantage of any secluded, quiet place to build a web or burrow. Spiders are naturally shy and therefore reclusive. They want to stay away from you way more than you would like to stay away from them.

Black widow spiders, brown recluse spiders, and wolf spiders all prefer to live at ground level. Black widow spiders and brown recluse spiders create webs to rest in, while wolf spiders create burrows. Outside it is common to find these three species in or under woodpiles, shrubs, fallen trees, and yard clutter. Inside, they hide in basements, under furniture, and in the bottom of closets and other storage spaces.

Orb-weaver spiders build their striking circular webs and mainly live outside. You’ll often spot their webs in gardens, trees, shrubs, and under roof eaves, and other overhangs.

  • Remove areas of standing water, keep lids on trash cans, and turn off exterior lights whenever possible to attract fewer insects that spiders like to hunt to your property.
